Step by step

  1. PlantingPlant the bulbs 2–3× as deep as the bulb is tall, with the tip facing up. Give them well-draining soil.
  2. GrowingWater sparingly in winter. In frost, a layer of leaves or compost protects the bulbs.
  3. BloomingIn April and May. Remove faded flowers, but leave the foliage until it has yellowed.
  4. After floweringLet the foliage die back naturally — this feeds the bulb for next year. Optionally lift and store dry.
